| Quote: | 09 - Amy Lee
Goth queen who lets her music do the talking.
Since 2003 and the release of Evanescence's multi-million selling 'Fallen' album, it's been hard to name a more significant female figure in rock than their singer and leading light Amy Lee. That year's 'Bring Me To Life' single was succeeded by several further hits, and after coming back from a potentially ruinous personal and business relationship to record a superb third album, Lee has proved beyond all doubt that she is worthy of her elevated status.
But it isn't just the music - Lee's taste for Victorian-style clothing and gothic makeup and jewellery has inspired an army of copycat fans, attracted to her dark, quirky glamour. Aside from this, her determination not to exploit her sex appeal has won her respect from both female and male fans. Evanescence's music - and it is often hard to name anyone in the band other than Lee, such is her influence - has come to epitomise the current craze for goth-metal chic. Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation are two of many bands that have seen their fortunes vastly improve in Evanescence's aftermath.
Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, the teenage Amy Lee was already a keen pianist and songwriter when she met future Evanescence collaborator and guitarist Ben Moody at a local youth camp. Moody's ears pricked up when he heard Lee playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' on piano. The duo were soon writing and performing songs together. Following a couplr of self-released EPs, they released their first full-length album, 'Origin' in 2000 on an independant label, it has since become a collector's item.
Moody and Lee were clearly proving themselves as a songwriting team. While the exact nature of their relationship remained secret, the duo seemed to be inseperable by the time they wrote and recorded the 14-million selling 'Fallen' album.
The album's ascent began with the phenomenally successful 'Bring Me To Life' single. Supported by a stunning video featuring a guest appearance from 12 Stones' Paul McCoy, it topped the charts in several countries, including the UK. Amy's spellbinding, pure vocals were a standout feature of both the single and the album. The Evanescence live experience was always about Amy Lee too, and her ability to keep several thousand fans enthralled.
'My Immortal', one of the several follow-up singles to 'Bring Me To Life', saw Lee deliver an puternice paean to loss and bereavement, and offered a glimpse into her life outside the band. By this time the relationship between Lee and Moody had deteriorated, with the guitarist abruptly walking out on the band in October 2003. The pair are yet to be reconciled. Although the usual 'creative differences' were cited for the split, ugly exchanges in the music press brought further attention and speculation to bear on the nature of their relationship, with Lee saying in one interview: "Nothing could make him happy... and anything that would especially make me happy would lead him to become furious."
Lee and Moody endured an intensely uncomfortable reunion in 2004, when they collected a Grammy Award for best Hard Rock Performance. Moody's uninterested demeanour during their joint acceptance speech seemed designed to embarrass and undermine Lee.
Moody was replaced by ex-Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo, but critics questioned whether Lee would be able to replicate the success of 'Fallen' without her long-time writing partner. To complicate matters, in 2005 Lee also ditched Evanescence's manager and a messy lawsuit ensued. The band's next album, 'The Open Door', would take longer to record than anticipated, meaning it was released six months later than planned. Given the speculation, Lee was determined to take her time and ensure that it was, as she put it "a success as a piece of art".
Its eventual appearance in October 2006 firmly answered critics and fans. The hits 'Call Me When You're Sober' and 'Lithium' more than maintained the band's momentum. The album topped the US Billboard chart, a feat that not even 'Fallen' had managed, and sold nearly 450,000 copies in the US during its first week on sale.
The Amy Lee of 2007 seems a happier and more confident soul. Last year she spoke with great candour to Kerrang! about her place in the present and hopes for the future: "This is where I want to be. I look around myself and think, I make a living from making music and I'm in control now. Before, people were controlling me and I wasn't even in control of my personal life. How insane is that? But I am now. I'm in the place where I need to be." Steve Beebee

Terry Balsamo on Amy Lee
"We're kindred spirits. Musically, we definitely have a lot of the same connections. I turned her on to stuff like Pantera and she turned me on to classical stuff and Bjork. We got along really well, threw it all together and made a record!" |

Cand a aparut TOD, Ev erau in fiecare numar. Acum cand noul album de la Within Temptation se va lansa in curand, ei sunt in fiecare numar. _________________
